Seahawks girl’s lacrosse protects home turf with senior night win against Smyrna

GEORGETOWN, Del. – Sussex Academy girl’s lacrosse took down Smyrna 13-9 Wednesday night in Georgetown.

The game was back and forth throughout, with Sussex Academy holding a one-goal lead at 6-5 at the half. Smyrna held the Seahawks scoreless for much of the third and capitalized on the drought to take a 7-6 advantage with a tally from Layla Strzalkowski with 3:45 remaining in the quarter.

Sussex Academy answered back in a big way, with two goals from Elizabeth Merrick and a score from Elizabeth Layton in a 55-second span that gave the Seahawks a 9-7 lead, before Smyrna closed the gap to one at 9-8 with Strzalkowski finding the back of the net before the third period’s close.

The Seahawks closed the game with a strong fourth quarter performance, outscoring Smyrna 4-1 to secure the senior day victory.
