Shore to Shore: A Pittsville chicken house gets a second life

PITTSVILLE, Md. In the newest edition of Shore to Shore, it’s not your typical shopping spot. In Pittsville, an old chicken house has become a must-visit destination for vintage lovers and bargain hunters.

Longtime Pittsville resident Meghan Massey said, “I had been working for Hershey for a while, and I had been… just not happy with what I was doing in retail. I had some stuff and an old barn, an old chicken house.”

After years in the corporate world, Massey decided it was time for a change, trading retail for something more personal and creative.

“I’m the third generation on this family farm, the Dennis family farm, and my son is the fourth. So, we are here, and we are here to stay,” Massey said.

Now, that old chicken house is a cozy vintage boutique, perfect for anyone who loves a good thrift find.

“As a young woman with a young child, I thrifted all the time. I went to flea markets constantly. Everything he had, I had when I was in my early 20s was thrifted,” Massey said.

For those who love the hunt for a diamond in the rough, here’s your next spot.

“We always have vintage clothes. That’s usually one of my favorite things—the vintage clothes and finds like plates and dishes, anything really pretty for your home. That’s what I’m really into,” Massey said.

The shop also features teacup sets, an array of coffee mugs, and handmade items painted with Maryland pride.

“Everything in here painted with the Maryland flag, I hand-painted myself in Maryland. I do gnomes, baskets, cigar boxes, crab shells, Christmas bulbs,” Massey said.

“It’s really neat to have my little bit of art out in the world somewhere,” she added.

While browsing, visitors may even encounter a furry friend or two.

“Archie and Lucy are the stars of the show, hands down. The store is definitely secondary to the cats. They live here full time and protect the building,” Massey said.

The local business is always on the lookout for new and interesting items to add to the growing chicken house.

The store is located at 6800 Friendship Rd, Pittsville, MD 21850 .
