PITTSVILLE, Md. – A Seaford man has been sentenced to 18 months of active incarceration in connection with a fatal car crash from Feb. 2025.

On Apr. 24, 20-year-old Adam McGinnis was sentenced for grossly negligent vehicular manslaughter following a plea hearing on Mar. 19. Administrative Judge S. James Sarbanes of the Circuit Court of Wicomico County sentenced McGinnis to the maximum sentence of ten years imprisonment, suspending all but 18 months to be served in the Wicomico County Detention Center. Upon release, McGinnis will be placed on five years of supervised probation with special conditions.

On Feb. 8, 2025, shortly after midnight, the Maryland State Police responded to a single vehicle collision on Gumboro Road in Pittsville. An investigation revealed that McGinnis, then 18 years of age, was the driver of the motor vehicle. One of McGinnis’ passengers, aged 21-years-old, was pronounced deceased on scene as a result of the injuries he sustained in the collision. Further investigation revealed that McGinnis was traveling between 94 and 105 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone prior to losing control of his vehicle.

Additionally, McGinnis’ blood was tested and found to have a Blood Alcohol Content of .19 grams, more than twice the legal limit in Maryland.

“At sentencing, the victim’s grieving mother made a profound victim impact statement that displayed grace and compassion to everyone in the courtroom,” said Wicomico County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Dykes. “Despite the depth of her loss, she transformed the moment into a plea for balance, requesting full accountability while extending the grace of a second chance for the man who took her son’s life.”
