SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. – The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) has announced that the new Route 1 bridge over Route 16, east of Milton, will be open to traffic starting Wednesday, Apr. 15.

Northbound motorists should expect delays beginning on the evening of Tuesday, April 14, as the contractor works to shift the traffic pattern onto the new bridge.

DelDOT officials say the Route 1 and Route 16 grade separated intersection project began in Jun. 2022, with the goal of improving safety and eliminating congestion at the signalized intersection. This intersection had the highest overall crash rate and highest number of injury crashes of all State Route 1 intersections, between Prime Hook and Five Points in Lewes, between 2012 and 2019.

With the opening of the bridge, a total of 36 signalized intersections between I-95 and Five Points in Lewes have been removed since work first began may years ago, in Jul. 1987. The project is expected to be fully completed this summer.
