New Veterans Service Office opens at Salisbury MVA
SALISBURY, Md. – About 7,000 veterans in Wicomico County along with 14,000 more in nearby counties will now be able to access benefits they so rightfully deserve just by walking through the doors at the Salisbury MVA.
“We don’t want people to have to travel off the Eastern Shore to get services. We think it’s important to do it right here in the community,” says Chrissy Nizer, the MDOT MVA Administrator.
On Thursday, officials celebrated the opening of a New Veterans Service Office in Salisbury at 251 Tilghman Road. “They can come here to enroll into their healthcare system and things of that nature. Get their Veterans ID card,” says Antoine Waller, the Director of the U.S. Deportment of Veterans Affairs.
Neil Keddie, a Vietnam Veteran and Salisbury resident, tells 47 ABC the old office in Downtown Salisbury wasn’t very accessible.Parking was a big problem. “Certainly the construction on Main Street didn’t help,” says Keddie.
The new office is right inside the Salisbury MVA, making is somewhat of a one-stop-shop. Plus with a full-time veteran’s benefits specialist, they want to help you understand just what you qualify for. “They often are confused by sort of like the red tape but we’re here to help them with that,” says Waller.
Keddie says this change may help remove those obstacles. “Especially if you’re starting to access the benefits then you don’t know where to start and this place is very helpful in guiding you in the right direction.”
With the opening of this office, the old one in Downtown Salisbury is officially closed. But the center in Easton is still active.
