Lithium Battery Causes Garage Fire in Bivalve

BIVALVE, Md. – Officials say a garage fire that occurred on Thursday afternoon in Bivalve was the result of a failed lithium ion battery. 

At 4:29 p.m. on Mar. 19, the Westside Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Tyaskin Nanticoke Road. The fire, located in a 12 foot by 24 foot free-standing garage, was discovered by the property owner. A total of 25 firefighters worked to battle the blaze for half an hour.

The total damage to the structure and its contents is estimated to be valued at $25,000. 

The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal determined the fire to be accidental in nature. The Maryland Department of the Environment was contacted to collect the remains of the failed battery, as well as another battery damaged in the fire.
