Ocean City officials looking to reconsider sports complex location
BERLIN, Md. – Ocean City officials looking at other options for their sports complex, following opposition from nearby residents and community members.
The proposed site would have been located next to Stephen Decatur High School, set to use 95 acres of land.
Berlin’s Mayor and Council sent a letter to Ocean City asking to remove the site from consideration. Residents along Flower Street cited concerns about a lack of space and potential congestion issues.
Resident of Flower Street, Janice Leonard, explains what makes the plan near Decatur an issue.
“The sports complex is not needed for the community, because it is going to cost a lot of congestion and a lot of frustration. They are starting too many projects start with one, and then go from there. The money is low, and we’re working off grants. A sports complex is not needed here for Berlin.”
There are several projects at hand, including the bridge that would cross the Flower Street neighborhood over Route 113 and into the downtown area, and the Berlin Community Center, which is also being built on Flower Street.
