Kent Island Earns Revenge In Shootout Win For Baysides

The Kent Island boys soccer team saw their perfect season come to an end less than a week ago in heartbreaking fashion after a double overtime loss to Stephen Decatur.

On Tuesday, the Buccaneers got their revenge.

In a game people will remember for a long time, the Bucs and Seahawks battled for most the night until Kent Island was finally able to pull out a 6-5 win in the 3rd round of sudden death penalty kicks. The win improves the Buccaneers to 13-1, while the loss drops the Seahawks to 10-1-2.

The Seahawks would strike first after Alton Walker played a free kick into the box, that John Ford would finish off in the box. The lead would hold until half, when the Bucs got rolling. Ryan Knaggs would get a step on his defender, send a shot to the far post that would just sneak in to tie the match up. Then just minutes later, Kent Island would add another after Michael Hagelin would be able to find the back of the net. Decatur dug deep though, and would find a bit of resolve themselves. Off a corner, Walker would bend his kick and send it in far post to tie the match. The teams would head to overtime, and eventually double overtime before going to a shootout. There, Kent Island would be sitting a goal up with 2 players to shoot. Jackson Davis would make an incredible diving save for Kent Island to give them a dominating advantage. With 2 shooters left, if the Bucs could score on either they would win, or if the Seahawks missed their last attempt.

Decatur wasn’t ready to go away just yet.

Noah Shockley came up with a huge save to get the rally started. That was followed by a strike from Wyatt Church. After the Bucs missed their next shot, we would head to a sudden death shootout. After the first two rounds were in the books, the Bucs would again have a chance to ice the match. Davis would come up with a save, setting up a potential match clinching goal for Kent Island. Jackson Kratovil was up next.

And he was ready for his chance.

He would send a strike to the upper 90 on the right side for the go-ahead strike, clinching the Bayside Title for the Bucs in dramatic fashion.

Kent Island returns to work in the state tournament when they will host the winner of Queen Anne’s and North Caroline, while Decatur host the winner of Hammond and Atholton.
