MD Flags at Half Mast for Civil Rights Heroes Day

MARYLAND – Maryland flags across the state were at half mast on Friday in recognition of Civil Rights Heroes Day.

In 2023 Governor Wes Moore proclaimed Feb. 20 as Civil Rights Heroes Day in Maryland. On this day, Marylanders recognize the courage, sacrifice and relentless efforts of civil rights and abolitionist leaders throughout history.

Nehemiah Bester of the ACLU of Maryland spoke with us as to why it’s important to recognize today.

“We stand on the shoulders of giants, to truly know Maryland you have to know the scholars and the protesters and the disruptors and the artists and the reformers who helped make Maryland what is today,” Bester said. “So on this day and on this month, its important that we honor those civil rights heroes.”

Bester also emphasized the importance of knowing history in order to better the future.
