Discover Delmarva Arts: Corbin Studio and Art Gallery
CRISFIELD, Md. – Art. It’s what connects us all. During Black History Month art can help connect us to the past, offering us a glimpse of how far the Black community has come, and the many triumphs.
Artist Winnie Pruitt’s work is on display at the Corbin Studio and Art Gallery in Crisfield. Brian Sutherland said her pieces showcase the Black experience and Black joy.
“She’ll be the featured artist for March, and she’s been an artist all her life,” Brian said. “She just now was discovered, and she’s got a house full of paintings.”
Winnie’s work has been on display for the community to see and people have been coming in in droves to view it, along with the other pieces in the gallery.
“It was children that came in from the It Takes A Village organization, and about 30 kids came in and right away they said, ‘that’s our school!” Brian said.
Representation matters, not just during Black History Month. Brian said it’s important that these local kids have an opportunity to see themselves in their leaders, and in art.
“I really enjoy, especially when kids come in and their eyes get really wide and they see their elementary school teacher,” Brian said. “The art teacher is on the board of directors. When they see her, and everyone just gets excited about art, that way you can sort of teach the kids a little bit about stuff they normally wouldn’t be picking up in school.”
