Hurlock Pushing for Grocery Store

(HURLOCK, Md) – Hurlock Mayor Earl Murphy said he wanted to bring a grocery store to the North Dorchester County community. That vision took a step closer to becoming reality, at the latest county council meeting.

Murphy says his goal was to bring options for fresh food to the North Dorchester Community. Specifically without needing to build a full grocery store. That’s why he brought a Letter of Intent to the County Council.

“We are showing the support from the citizens of Hurlock that we are very appreciative of the Dollar General and everybody’s concern here. And the whole act in the surrounding areas is something with more. And their market concept is perfect for what we’re looking for,” says Murphy.

Plenty of people are on the fence about bringing a Dollar General Marketplace to Hurlock.

While one nearby town councilman visiting Hurlock tells us it’s a benefit for those beyond one North Dorchester town

William Lauck of East New Market tells us, “We are showing the support from the citizens of Hurlock that we are very appreciative of the Dollar General and everybody’s concern here in Hurlock and in the surrounding areas is something with more. And their market concept is perfect for what we’re looking for.”

Mayor Murphy says he wants to take the support of the town and county to Dollar General’s Corporate Office to modify the existing building in Hurlock. And it would provide a benefit to many of the small community’s aging population.

Murphy tells WMDT, “You know, nobody has to travel citizen to or having troubles with transportation who are looking for that currently have to travel 15 miles away to Cambridge to go to the local store. Or to Caroline County, seven miles away to Federalsburg.”

Murphy says the next step is hearing from the Dollar General Corporate Office.
