Local teacher uses grant for classroom flexible seating

In Delaware, one elementary teacher has been awarded an educational grant that she's using to mix up her classroom.

Wendy Joseph, is a 4th grade teacher at East Millsboro Elementary and the winner of a Farmer's Insurance $2,500 educational grant.

She says she'll be using it to purchase more flexible seating for her classroom. This year she decided to move away from a conventional classroom setting and mix things up.

So far she's added standing tables, floor seating, even lap desks  and its proven to be a big success for her students.

"They really become self aware of how they learn best. At the beginning of the school year they test out the different seats to see if it works for me, 'does this help me focus or does it deter my focus'. So they get to try them all out to learn and take responsibility like I can sit here or I can't sit there."

She says it lets her students be independent and they are a lot more engaged because of it. She's hoping to give even more flexible options with this grant.
