DCPS Holds 2nd Annual State of the School Address
(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Dorchester County Superintendent, Dr. Jymil Thompson hosted the second annual state of the School Address Wednesday to highlight many of the school system’s ongoing efforts.
From improving school safety through drills to the latest progress on the “23 No More” Campaign, he wants to keep the community as engaged as possible.
“Because we want to be transparent with the community and let them know everything that we’re doing as the school was working, what’s not working? And what we plan to do going forward to remedy any situation that is causing the school system,” says Dr. Thompson.
The school system hosted a panel featuring specialists from the district and parents.
Parents like Shakeeta Brown who have students with special needs. Giving them a chance to discuss how to help students feel comfortable and succeed.
Shakeeta tells WMDT, “If the children have no idea or can’t get the proper education and the love and the things that we’re supposed to provide, then they won’t have a future, and a future of unhappiness and a future of not being educated. ”
Over the course of 2025, Dorchester County schools saw improvements across the board on the Maryland Report Card; giving them a good baseline for how they can set up for success throughout 2026.
Dr. Thompson tells us, “We’re going to do everything possible to ensure that our kids are learning and having the necessary programmatic pieces and the resources to continue to progress and move forward.”
Dr. Thompsons says he’s optimistic that if they keep up with things, they’ll be within the top 15 school systems in the state in a year’s time.
Dorchester County Public Schools currently sit around 20th in the Maryland rankings.
