Snow Days vs. Remote Learning

DELMARVA. — Parents and educators are expressing mixed feelings about schools’ decisions to implement remote learning instead of giving snow days.

Schools across Delmarva are choosing to send students home with computers during inclement weather so they can attend classes remotely, rather than canceling school altogether. Some parents and educators are upset with the decision, saying students deserve a day off and that having to teach remotely on short notice is an inconvenience for educators.

Parent Shirley Outten says her feelings on the topic are mixed. “I think if they had the day off due to snow or anything like that, it’s a good idea for them to have time to go out and play. But if they do have the remote learning [capabilities], maybe, if they have another day, they should do it like that.”

Sussex Technical High School, Sussex Academy, the Laurel School District, and more all held remote learning days on Tuesday. The Laurel School District will hold a remote learning day on Wednesday.
