Weather Tidbits: Freezing Rain Impacts

We’ll be discussing freezing rain impacts in this edition of Weather Tidbits. When it comes to ice, it does not take a lot to cause problems. An ice accretion between 0.01″ and 0.1″ is a glaze of ice. Travel becomes hazardous, and there are minor to moderate impacts on bridges, overpasses, and elevated surfaces. Black ice is likely with an ice accretion between 0.1″ and 0.25″. Roadways ice over and hazardous travel is likely. Minor tree damage is also possible. Roads can become nearly impassable if ice accretions are greater than 0.5″. Tree damage and power outages are also likely. Ice accretions of 1″ or greater would prove to be catastrophic.
