Opportunities for Medical Students at TidalHealth
DELMARVA – In this week’s Health Beat, brought to you by TidalHealth, WMDT spoke with Awenita “Nita” Hensley, the administrative director of medical education at TidalHealth.
Hensley spoke with us about the residency and fellowship programs available at TidalHealth.
“TidalHealth’s core mission, [and] the whole reason we started this was to train the future providers,” she said. “Our goal is to bring them here to the Eastern Shore, train them and keep them here.”
Hensley told us that TidalHealth is very community based, and that switching into an academic institution will not change that. In fact, students are guaranteed to receive hand-on community health experiences.
“They go out with our Swift team to… go out with our wellness van to help take care of the community,” she explained. “Our graduate medical education programs have the simulation center that was created so that they can learn how to do certain procedures on our high fidelity mannequins before they ever touch a human.”
She says this technique allows students to not only do the procedures and take care of the patient, but ask questions to fellow physicians in real time. Students are each paired with a mentor related to their potential fellowship. For example, if a student wants to study cardiology as a fellowship, TidalHealth will pair them up with a cardiologist as their mentor.
