Arsonarrest

DORCHESTER COUNTY, Md. – Deputy State Fire Marshals have arrested a Hurlock man for intentionally setting multiple fires inside a home during an argument and physical altercation with his mother on Christmas Eve.

32-year-old Matthew Haigis was arrested Thursday and is facing multiple charges, including arson in the first degree and attempted murder.

On December 24th, just before 5 p.m., deputies with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the 48-hundred block of Skinners Run Road for a domestic-related incident.

Once on scene, deputies discovered a fire inside the home while the suspect’s mother was still inside.

Firefighters quickly responded and put out the flames.

After an investigation, deputy State Fire Marshal’s determined Haigis set multiple fires while she was still inside.

Investigators had been searching for him since the day of the fire.

Haigis was taken to the Dorchester County Detention Center where he remains held without bond.

He was also wanted by Pennsylvania law enforcement on multiple outstanding warrants and will be extradited at a later date to face those charges.
