The Apothecarium’s employees continue to push for union rights

SALISBURY, Md. – Since November of 2024, employees at the Apothecarium dispensary in Salisbury have been fighting for union rights.

Employee, Allison White said the dispensary’s parent company, TerrAscend, has been stalling the contract bargaining process.

“They don’t want to pay us a living wage, they aren’t willing to agree with just cause when it comes to firing people, when it comes to termination; they like to be able to let people go whenever they like,” White said.

That’s why White was hesitant to speak with WMDT. She cited workplace harassment, retaliation, and said colleagues of hers have even been fired. The Employees are represented by United Food and Commercial Workers International Union Local 27, which recently filed charges against TerrAscend.

“The charges were related to the fact that management at our location was removing union literature and union flyers from a break room and not allowing us to freely spread information among each other,” White said.

WMDT attempted to reach out to TerrAscend for comment, but we did not hear back. In the meantime, White said she and her colleagues plan to continue to push the company to sign the dotted line.

“We’re fighting for this because we love our jobs, I love my job, I love working there,” White said. “I love helping people in the community– I work with a bunch of really amazing people, and we’re just fighting to be represented by UFCW and be respected at work.”
