UPDATE: One dead in fatal car crash, victim identified
MILTON, Del.- Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a fatal car crash that happened Saturday evening in Milton.
Police say a 75-year-old, Frederica man, was driving a 2020 Toyota RAV 4 in the right lane of southbound Coastal Hwy., north of Eagles Crest Rd.
A 31-year-old, Newark man, driving a 2015 Audi A3 behind the Toyota, in the same lane, failed to slow down and hit the Toyota from behind.
Authorities say the Toyota was forced off the west side of the road and was overturned before coming to a stop in a grassy area.
Police say the driver of the Toyota was ejected from the car.
According to police reports, the Audi also traveled off the west side of the road and went through a chain like fence, before coming to a stop.
The driver of the Toyota, identified as 75-year-old Steven M. Thompson, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say there was also a 69-year-old passenger in the Toyota, who was transported to Beebe Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Audi was also transported to Beebe Hospital with serious injuries.
Police believe impairment may have been a factor in the crash.
Southbound Coastal Highway was closed for approximately 4 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
The investigation is ongoing.
