Queen Anne’s County Going For State Title Sweep

Queen Anne’s County will have a unique and incredible opportunity this Saturday of having not one, but two local high school field hockey teams crowned state champions. Kent Island High School and Queen Anne’s High School both have earned their way to a title match and are now just one win away from bring home the title.

The schools usually known for their fierce rivalry, have had a different approach this playoff run. The Buccaneers compete in the 2A division, while the Lions were placed in the 1A this year. That meant they wouldn’t see each other in their respective playoff runs, which allowed for something new to grow from their competitive drive. A since of camaraderie and a realization of something special they could do together.

A county winning two state title in the same sport, in the same year.

Rivals when they face one another. Connected when they don’t.

Kent Island and Queen Anne’s have been busing together to Annapolis High School to practice on a turf field. Many of the teams players have also been on the same travel team and have grown up playing the game with one another.

While they both stand one win away from a state title, their paths in getting there have been very different. It’s been a magical season for the Bucs that has saw them win the Bayside Title on their way to going undefeated to this point. All that, with a team without a single senior on the roster. The Lions on the other hand have shattered program records on their tournament run. Queen Anne’s won the regional title for just the second time in school history, and will be playing in the teams first ever state title match.

History will be made Saturday, and possibly, a county will stake its claim as one of the states best in field hockey.

Queen Anne’s will face Liberty at 11am at Washington College for the 1A State Title, while Kent Island will take on Hereford at 1:30 pm for the 2A State Title.
