“Customer Relief Fund” may Alleviate Energy Costs

SALISBURY, Md. – Energy bills on Delmarva have been steadily increasing, but Delmarva Power offers a relief fund that could help ease the financial burden for some customers.

Through the first half of December, more than 22,000 Delmarva Power customers received a “high usage alert,” meaning they used at least 30% more energy than during the same period last year. The company is working to reduce costs for low- to moderate-income households through its Customer Relief Fund, which provides up to $300 in bill assistance.

To be eligible, customers must meet several requirements, said Mary Oakey, senior communications specialist at Delmarva Power. “You have to have a balance that is 60 days past due, you have to carry a balance of $250, and you have to be an active residential customer,” Oakey said.

Michael Payne, executive vice president and corporate counsel with the Alternative Energy Development Group, said consumers should closely monitor their energy bills. “Tariffs for residential and small business accounts recently increased,” Payne said. “Many people are seeing that in their bills as they open them this month or starting last month. Those increases are substantial on both a relative and percentage basis.”

Even customers who are not eligible for financial assistance can take steps to conserve energy during the winter months, Oakey said. “During the wintertime, it’s great to open up your blinds and let the sunlight in. The sunlight will really warm your house,” she said. “At night, make sure you’re closing your blinds.”
