Milton meadery to hose annual Yule Market
Milton, Del. – History and rich traditions are the driving, inspirational force at Brimminghorn Meadery. This weekend, they will come together to celebrate the coming of the winter season with the community through their annual Yule Market.
Mead, an ancient honey wine dating back more than 20,000 years, has different versions in many cultures spanning across China, Africa and Europe.
“It is technically the oldest alcohol known to mankind predates everything else,” General Manager at Brimminghorn Meadery Damien Harmon said. He said though “every culture drank it” it is largely associated with Vikings.
Vikings, the ancient Norse peoples of modern-day Denmark, Sweden and Norway, serve as a source of inspiration for the decor and atmosphere at Brimminghorn. Yule, the Norse pagan celebration of the return of the sun after the longest night of the year, is and was observed by many Germanic peoples throughout Europe.
Brimminghorn’s meads, wines, ciders and beers are a source of cultural and spiritual pride for its owners, Jon Talkington and Robert Walker, Jr., who themselves have Scandinavian and Slavic heritage. Harmon said because the owners take the mythology around their products to heart, there’s always something new to learn for customers and their patrons. Harmon said many of the names of products are based off of Norse gods.
“Mostly everything that [Jon] does has some kind of meaning behind it, whether it be name, whether it be recipe or something,” he said. “So that also plays into the learning experience.”
For this year’s Yule Market, Harmon said it is a chance to connect with the community by uplifting local artisans and small businesses and providing a means of attendees getting unique, last minute gifts.
Food will also be available through their partnership with Brandy Lynn’s BBQ Food Truck at the event and will run from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
