Discover Delmarva Arts: Shadow box pieces

WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. – Time moves fast for Joan Guerriero when she’s hard at work in her at-home studio.

She makes shadow boxes. They’re snap shots of scenes from the outdoors that she transforms into visual 3D art pieces. Joan found a love for this type of art when she was just a little girl.

“As a child, I used to go to the creek near my home when I was feeling upset or down or whatever, and it gave me such peace to walk along the rocks or listen to the babbling creek or look at all the creatures in the ground,” Joan said.

And now she’s teaching others how to make them. Joan said the boxes themselves may be small, but the stories that’re told through them are never ending.

“It is sensory friendly in the fact that it’s soothing to do, and it’s hands-on– anyone can do it! It’s a creative outlet,” Joan said.
