Mobile Methadone unit is set to expand in January
WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. — Wicomico County’s mobile methadone unit will expand into Somerset County next month.
Health officials said the expansion has been a goal for years but was delayed due to staffing issues. They noted that many patients travel from outside of Wicomico County for the program, as there is only one provider in Somerset. For some, transportation barriers have made it impossible to attend the program.
Dr. Cynthia Calixte, deputy physician at the Wicomico and Somerset County Health Departments, said the expansion is a significant step forward.
“It’s going to have a huge impact because we’re all about eliminating barriers,” Dr. Calixte said. “When we’re literally in your county, in your own backyard, we’re closer to home. It’s just one less barrier you have, especially since many people in the three lower counties struggle with transportation.”
The program will begin operating on a bi-weekly schedule starting January 7. Appointments will be required, and individuals must call ahead to schedule.
