Wicomico County Landfill “Cell 7” construction update
WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. — The Wicomico County Council and the deputy director of Public Works discussed the construction of a new section at the Newland Park Landfill, known as “Cell 7.”
After months of behind-the-scenes work, landfill officials now have a timeline for the construction of Cell 7.
Wicomico County Public Works Deputy Chief Adam Corry said, “We were happy to report that we submitted the 100% design plans for Cell 7 to the Maryland Department of the Environment on October 14.”
Corry added that his team met with the Maryland Department of the Environment on October 22 to emphasize the importance of opening the new cell on time.
“We want to have Cell 7 ready for the RFP [Request for Proposal], Request for Bid. We want to have that up on OpenGov and available for public viewing no later than the close of business on Monday, December 22,” Corry said.
He also noted that legislation passed by the county on August 6, which limits out-of-county waste for commercial haulers, has been a significant help.
“The legislation has allowed us to maximize waste placement and compaction, gaining us an additional four or five months, which is huge,” Corry said.
Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano said the county is working on a tight timeline but remains optimistic about the project.
“We should be right on target for where we need to be. They will start construction on that last cell—the final cell on the current footprint,” Giordano said.
Corry added that the goal is to have Cell 7 open and operational within 10 months.
“We think that’s an optimistic goal. Weather is something we can’t control, but we’re pulling out all the stops to make that happen so our landfill stays open,” Corry said.
He acknowledged that the timeline may be tight but expressed confidence that his team is prepared for the challenge.
Corry also encouraged the public to recycle and reduce unnecessary waste in the landfill.
