Discover Delmarva Arts: Art League of Ocean City Helps Children Pursue the Arts

OCEAN CITY, Md. — For many children, art is more than just an activity—it’s a way to express themselves, build confidence, and feel seen. The Art League of Ocean City is opening the door for the next generation to fall in love with the arts. Through hands-on after-school programs, summer camps, kid-centric classes, and art shows dedicated to artwork made by youth, kids have a safe space to learn new skills and find their voice through art.

“They’re after-school programs, so the children can come and take classes, have an opportunity for self-expression, and the time to be creative together,” Jessica Bauer of the Art League of Ocean City said.

At Buckingham and Pocomoke elementary schools and Snow Hill Middle School, students in after-school programs can dive into mediums like drawing, painting, sculpture, and collage.

“We’ve seen students who can seem reserved, or just need an outlet, really bloom from these programs. The instructors themselves get the great opportunity to work with the kids and see life and their perspective through their eyes,” Bauer said.

Bauer says it gives the kids a new way to communicate and a new perspective. “You have that ability to communicate [in a way] that isn’t verbal. You get to say something with your hands—with the things you’ve created. You have a safe space to be able to say what you’d like to without having to necessarily verbalize it.”

“Arts education at any age is important. Kids, [and] adults, we just need an opportunity to be able to express ourselves, have some time to check in, and be creative,” Bauer said.

Coming up in March, the Art League is hosting a manga and anime youth art show featuring artwork from elementary, middle, and high school students.
