SWAC Hosts Classics for a Cause Concert

SALISBURY, Md. — The Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council is hosting its annual Classics for a Cause concert this Friday, Nov. 14, featuring performances from students across Wicomico County and the Salisbury Children’s Choir.

This marks the 13th year the council has hosted its annual fundraiser concert. The program is produced and performed by students.

“The cause is children helping children, youth helping youth, so it doesn’t get much better than that,” SWAC Executive Director Therese Hamilton said.

Attendees are encouraged to donate a used instrument for free admission to support the council’s instrument barn. The donated instruments will be distributed to students in need.

“We refurbish them and then give them to any student in Wicomico County who cannot afford an instrument,” Hamilton said.

The concert will feature vocal and instrumental performances from young musicians across Wicomico County.

“It started with pianists, and now this year, we have a harpist, a violinist, singers, and even a dancer. It’s just a variety of beautiful expressions of music,” Hamilton said.

Performers say the concert is an opportunity to share their talents and create opportunities for other students to pursue the arts.

“Using that as a steppingstone for a fundraiser to help other kids and give them instruments so they can have the same and be blessed with the same opportunities we’re able to enjoy today,” Student Co-Chair Avalai Swinehart said.

“It’s such a gift to be able to share that with so many people and help them feel the joy of all the arts, music, and talents that we all have been given,” Swinehart said.

This year’s theme is Tomorrow, a reference to the classic musical Annie, encouraging students to envision the future.
