Humane Society, Animal Control working to adjust code

SALISBURY, Md. – The Director of the Humane Society of Wicomico County is working with county leaders to make sure no dogs are left out in the cold and neglected this winter season.

As it is right now, the Humane Society works alongside the county and animal control if there are any concerns about an animal being left outside during cold weather.

But under state and city laws, animal control can only intervene under very narrow circumstances.

That’s why Kim Nock, the Director of the Humane Society, says she’s working with the county to give animal control a bit more discretion when it comes to handling these cases.

“Not every dog is the same, not every dog is the same age, the same condition, I want them to be able to use their own best judgment about how a dog’s appearance is when they get there, how their physical appearance is,” Nock said.

Currently, there are no changes in the code, but Nock says she, animal control, and the county are working together.

Nock also wants to remind everyone that when calling animal control, people should put their personal opinions aside, and only report instances where dogs are in danger or not being cared for.
