Flamingos running wild in Salisbury Zoo

SALISBURY, Md. — At the Salisbury Zoo, the pink-feathered creatures ran the show this morning.

The flamingos moved from one habitat to another, a new space featuring more sunlight, room and vantage points for visitors. A sight like this is rare at the zoo but represents an important step toward improving the birds’ quality of life. As they made their way to their new home, the flock stayed together for safety — though one bird briefly got lost along the way.

Luke Karider, the zoo’s collections curator, said, “When we’re trying to move them, you know, sometimes — usually when one bird moves, the rest of the birds will follow. But this one just kind of had a mind of its own. And I think secretly he wanted his own little parade.”

In the future, the zoo hopes to hold flamingo encounters where visitors will be able to sit with the birds and feed them.
