BVSPCA still needs your help

SALISBURY, Md. — The Brandywine Valley SPCA rescued 100 animals a little more than three weeks ago.

Sara Smith, senior director of marketing and communications for the BVSPCA, said, “We are just so grateful to the community that has stepped up to help with this.”

Sussex County has rallied together, helping by volunteering, donating, fostering and adopting. The past three weeks have been a journey for the animals, as workers said they were scared and under the weather after being rescued from a bad situation in New Castle.

BVSPCA herd technician Shelly Walker said, “It’s just been really nice to watch them from when they came in — these scared dogs cowering in the back of the kennels. Now they’re at the door, tails wagging.”

There have even been a few success stories along the way.

Smith said, “We just had one of our hounds adopted from Canal Fest last weekend. They’ve already reached out to us to show us how wonderful he’s doing in his new home.”

The goal is to find forever homes for all the animals, many of whom are still waiting for their people. Mr. Boris is one of them.

Walker said, “Boris was a little ‘stranger danger’ at first. And, you know, we kind of took it slow with him, and now you see him out in the yard and he’s running up to everybody. He’s happy to see everyone.”

If you are unable to adopt an animal, the BVSPCA still needs help with fostering. “It’s a short-term commitment, and we provide everything for you,” Walker said. “We’ll give you food, litter and supplies — anything you might need during the pet’s stay.”

The organization also needs more volunteers and donations.

“Hopefully a lot of them get adopted soon. They all deserve to be home for the holidays,” Walker said.

The BVSPCA is hosting an event called Bark on the Boards in Rehoboth Beach on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Boris, who was featured in this story, will be there hoping you’ll take him and his friends home.
