Nor’easter Causes Severe Erosion Along Delaware’s Coastline

BETHANY BEACH, Del. — A powerful nor’easter battered Delaware’s coastline over the weekend, causing significant beach erosion in Bethany Beach and other parts of Sussex County.

Strong winds and relentless waves flattened dunes, carved out parts of the shoreline, and pushed water dangerously close to homes and businesses. The extent of the erosion stunned residents and visitors alike.

“I wish they would just have a better plan,” said resident Martina Gonzalez. “We spend so much money on replenishing the beach, and it just gets washed away. Bethany Beach is a beautiful town — let’s keep the beach beautiful all year round.”

The storm damage has renewed concerns about the long-term sustainability of beach replenishment projects, which often cost millions of dollars and are frequently undone by coastal storms.

Officials have yet to announce when or how the affected areas will be restored.
