Surf Ave. Walkway to be Replaced with Wood
REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – The City of Rehoboth Beach announced on Thursday that they plan to replace the Surf Avenue walkway with wood, rather than concrete as previously planned.
The City says that the plans were changed after officials listened to concerns from local homeowners and residents. Under the original plan, crews planned to expand the walkway to five feet when replacing it with concrete. However, under the updated plan, the walkway will remain four feet in width. Officials say the new plan will for the walkway will be ADA-compliant.
The cost to replace the 200 foot section of the walkway, which has been around for decades, will be roughly $18,000. The City says they will use the same boards as on the boardwalk, which has resulted in a lower than anticipated cost.
“Upon further reflection after listening to the residents, the City of Rehoboth Beach has agreed to retain the mini-boardwalk on Surf Avenue and rebuild it with similar wood to preserve its aesthetics, charm, and historic nature,” says City Manager Taylour Tedder. “We understand the nostalgia that comes with this stretch of walkway and are happy that this was a situation where we were able to reassess and act with purpose to protect what so many of us see as an asset to the charm of our city.”
The project should be completed by the end of the year. No start date has been issued at this time, but updates should be sent to residents before work begins.
