Pinehurst Elementary School classroom becomes gingerbread land

SALISBURY, Md.- Kids attending Pinehurst Elementary School were able to transform their classrooms into whatever theme they wanted Thursday.

As a school, they do this four times a year and the classrooms can become very creative.

One of the classrooms was transformed into a gingerbread land theme.

The second grade teacher behind the transformation got the idea for this theme because her students went to see Hansel and Gretel and they were in awe about the gingerbread in the show.

By transforming the classrooms rooms into a fun atmosphere, we were told it makes students more eager to learn.

“You really get the kids attention that way, the kids absolutely love coming to school and you can really pair it with harder content and it really pushes them to work harder,” Jill Hitchens, second grade teacher at Pinehurst, said.

For the gingerbread transformation, Hitchens formed her lesson plans around the theme by having students compare gingerbread books and learning how to make gingerbread themselves.

While this transformation was a hit, Hitchens is already thinking about how she will transform her room next time around.
