Keeping your doors shut can be helpful during a fire

SALISBURY, Md.- Firefighters at the Salisbury Fire Department gave their recommendations on why people should keep their doors closed at night.

When a fire breaks out, it is much safer to have doors shut.

The door adds an extra layer of protection for you if a fire is going in the direction of your room.

Firefighters provided this to us as this was the case in a fire that happened on Robinson Street on Wednesday.

The room with the door shut had little to no damage.

Firefighters told us that having your doors closed gives you a higher chance of staying alive as well, compared to someone who didn’t shut their door.

“A door actually in essence is actually a shield, a door we normally think of as our privacy, but in a fire it can be a life saver, a door will keep the heat, flames, and the smoke, keep it going in another direction from inside,” Bryan Records, Assistant Fire Chief of Salisbury, said.

The fire department said that you can add clothing and towels along the edges of the door to keep out smoke.

You are recommended to have smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher in your home, and if you don’t know how to work a fire extinguisher there are lessons you can take at the station.
