Jun. 10 – Wicomico Public Libraries Summer Reading Program

Wicomico Public Libraries is excited to announce its Summer Reading Program for 2016.

This year’s theme is “On Your Mark, Get Set…Read!” The Summer Reading Program kicks off on Saturday, June 25th, 12:00 PM at the Centre Library Branch with fun activities, crafts and treats. Learn to juggle with Cascading Carlos. Kick Off Week continues with Silly Joe Consiglio on Wednesday, June 29th, 10:30 AM at the Downtown Library and 1:00 PM at the Pittsville Library Branch. Silly Joe will get you on your feet with singing and dancing to his own original silly songs.

The children’s Summer Reading Program has two components: part one invites kids from birth through 18 years of age to come to any of the Library’s branches to receive a Summer Reading game board and participate in reading activities to earn prizes. This year the grand prize is a 529 College Savings Plan valued at $250. Pre-readers will have a chance to win a Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition and elementary age kids are eligible to win a Kindle Fire HD. Each game board is specifically created for each age group: birth to 5 years old, 6 to 11 year olds and teens. The board provides an assortment of activities to do at home from talking and singing to your baby, reading with your child and attending teen programs. In addition to reading during the summer, part two of the program allows kids and their families to come to an array of free performances and programs that will be taking place from June 25th – August 20th. Summer Reading offers fun, educational programs and reading activities to help kids avoid the “summer slide” – which results in losing ground on what they learned over the school year. Studies show that by the 5th grade, children can lose 2 to 3 years of educational progress, due simply to a lack of exposure to reading and educational opportunities over the summer months.

Wicomico Public Libraries is also offering a Summer Reading Program for adults – The 2016 Library Olympics. Adults are eligible to be entered into a drawing for monthly prizes at any Library branch by completing 3 quizzes and/or reading a book and entering a raffle slip. The Grand Prize is an Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet.

Wicomico Public Libraries are located in Downtown Salisbury, the Centre at Salisbury, in Pittsville, and the Library Bookmobile.
