Locals Discuss Latest SNAP Cuts

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Big changes for SNAP benefits coming tomorrow.

On October 1st, the amount of money SNAP families will get monthly will be reduced.

It was one of the provisions of President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill.

In addition, the SNAP Ed program is being rolled back.
It was meant to help beneficiaries make informed, healthy decisions.

And next year, the state of Maryland will phase out its spending match of half the funding.

A local farmer told us he’s been selling some of his produce through SNAP, so these changes worry him.

“…SNAP, rather, is really good about helping to promote local farmers as well. You’ve probably heard of the Maryland match and things along those programs. I’m not sure what’s going on with them, but that’s another way that they’ve used to incentivize people for using their SNAP benefit at the farmer’s market…” says local farmer, Ethan Cook.

In Dorchester County, programs like that helped connect residents with fresh produce at a reduced price.

Cook says, “…We all want access to healthy, fresh food. And the best way to do that for a lot of SNAP participants is through the farmer’s market. You can’t beat that, you know, So pricing is now. Yeah, pricing is definitely work is now comparable to what you have at the grocery store.”

Increased costs of SNAP benefits for Marylanders will completely go into effect by October first, 2027.
