Local educators named finalists for Maryland’s Teacher of the Year award

SALISBURY, M.d. — For their students and colleagues, these two teachers are already champions in the classroom. But now, the state of Maryland is recognizing them as finalists for the Teacher of the Year award.

This year, two teachers from Wicomico and Worcester counties were named finalists for Maryland’s Teacher of the Year award.
Emma Cohn Matthews teaches english at Wicomico High School, and has two pieces of advice for new teachers– give students support, and “take the time.”

“I try to take a lot of time to get to know them personally. Understand what their interests are, what their commitments might be outside of school. It’s really easy to get bogged down in the curriculum and maintaining exactly where we’re supposed to be, and although those are, of course, important, that’s a big reason why we’re here. Supporting students holistically is really the main purpose here” Cohn Matthews said.

Worcester county’s finalist, Chef Phillip Cropper, has led the culinary program at Worcester Technical High School for over 10 years. To him, the recognition is both an honor, and a sign to keep up his innovative teaching methods.

“This recognition motivates me to continue advocating for my students and the CTE (Career and Technical Education) world, and to showcase the incredible pathways available to our students in that world,” Cropper said.

Cropper said he’s not afraid to deviate from traditional teaching methods, and other educators shouldn’t be either.

“Seeking opportunities to connect with your community, involve your students in real life projects and opportunities. Explore different innovative teaching methods,” Cropper said.

Whether or not they take home the statewide award, they’ve already earned the highest honor from their students.

The winner of Maryland’s Teacher of the Year Award will be announced on Friday, Sept. 26.
