Seaford Urologists Bringing Aquablation to Sussex Patients
SEAFORD, Del. — Dr. David Cohen, a board-certified urologist at TidalHealth Nanticoke, has been practicing for more than a decade.
After medical school at George Washington University in D.C., Dr. Cohen spend 20 years in the Hudson Valley in New York before making his way to Delmarva.
Dr. Elizabeth Kornfield Chadwell is also a board-certified urologist working alongside Dr. Cohen at TidalHealth Nanticoke in Seaford.
Dr. Chadwell completed medical school and her residency at Tufts University School of Medicine. She then made her way back to the East Coast where she has been for the last 14 years.
Drs. Cohen and Chadwell swear by a groundbreaking procedure known as Aquablation.
“So aquablation, as it’s called, is a procedure that allows us to remove tissue in the prostate that is blocking the flow of urine, similar to the procedures in the past,” says Dr. Cohen. “Most commonly referred to as scraping, the procedure accomplishes that with water rather than the electric knife that we’ve been using for the last 60 or 70 years.”
Dr. Chadwell says aquablation uses ultrasound and water to remove excess prostate tissue, adding that it is faster and safer than procedures of the past.
“The other thing that is good about it is that it is also reproducible from one urologist to another,” says Dr. Chadwell.
Used to treat conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men who as they age experience prostate growth into the urethra channel, aquablation eases thickening of bladder muscle.
“Over time, that bladder thickening can turn into a problem where your bladder doesn’t contract as well or doesn’t work as well,” says Dr. Chadwell. “That’s one of the dangers of not treating this problem; you can potentially end up with a bladder that doesn’t contract anymore at all, which isn’t always somthing we can fix.”
Patients should consult their primary care provider before scheduling an appointment with Drs. Cohen and Chadwell.
“It may not always be a prostate issue or a bladder issue,” says Dr. Cohen. “It may be a medical issue that can be taken care of before you come see us; but, otherwise you can also make an appointment online, through the TidalHealth website.”
