NASA Visitor Center brings back Night Sky Summer Series

NASA has an exciting, free, family friendly way to spend some evenings at the beach this summer with their Night Sky Summer Series.

On Assateague Island in Virginia, NASA will be hosting an Astronomy and Night Sky Summer Series starting on Thursday, July 14. The series is a collaboration between Assateague Island National Seashore, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Delmarva Space Sciences Foundation, and the NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center.

The event will start with an Astronomy 101 presentation at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Herbert H. Bateman Education Center Auditorium at 7:30 PM. Later in the evening, visitors can observe the night sky through telescopes and binoculars at the north end of the beach parking lot #1.

Visitors will have the chance to look at planets, the moon, clusters and galaxies. The series will continue on July 21 and August 12, with August 12 focusing on the Perseid meteor, as it will be at its peak.

Kim Check, manager of the Visitor Center, spoke to the success of the event by saying, “It is truly a wonderful experience for people of all ages. With a turnout of over 4,000 people for last year’s series, we hope that this number will only continue to grow.”

The center says that the Astronomy 101 presentation will take place no matter what, but the telescope viewing is dependent on weather. For more information about the Astronomy and Night Sky Summer Series or the Visitor Center, call 757-824-1344 or visit this NASA website.
