Wicomico County Fair starts NOW!!!
SALISBURY, Md. –The Wicomico County Fair starts tonight. It will be a weekend packed full of competitions and prizes that you won’t want to miss.
Recreation Program Specialist for the City of Salisbury, Randy McFadden said, “We have our crown jewel of the event is our winging contests that we have here, where contestants put on the line their stomachs and a little bit of their soul for a little bit. The heat for the winning competition.”
The wings get hotter and hotter each round and if you win? You get the championship belt! If that’s not up your alley, they have watermelon and pie eating contests, seed spitting and animal competitions!
Livestock department head, Maggie Ball said, “We have cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, waterfowl, guineas, you name it. We have it all here. The kids work very hard all year long to raise these animals, to be able to show here at the fairs.”
Local kids, were showing fairgoers the ropes, sharing there are three types of showmanship. Gavin said, “The market is basically showing off how much meat and stuff they have and if they’re I guess, so-called ready for the table breeding.”
There’s also breeding and all the kids favorite… showmanship.
“How well you show off your animal and how well your animal works for you. How well you show off your animal and how well your animal works for you.” said Gavin.
Local kid, Ellie shared that showmanship isn’t as easy as it looks. “You have to practice like each, every day to get muscle on them. You have to, like, run them around.” she said.
This is the 89th year, of the Wicomico county fair- and it will run all weekend. McFadden said that the community should make the most of the fair, “You know, even if you’re from the area, you might not know what different things are out here. So it’s always good to see what’s happening in different corners of the county.”
The fair is taking place at WinterPlace Park. This will be the first year they are hosting a corn hole competition.
