Diakonia breaks ground on NEW “House of Hope” facility

WEST OCEAN CITY, Md. – Diakonia made a huge announcement, they are building an all-in-one facility to help the disadvantaged. Maryland Department of Housing & Community Development Secretary Jake Day said the homeless issue is critical.

“There is rural homelessness, and although it is not as visible as urban homelessness, it is so critical that we be a partner to the entities that are working really hard to help Maryland families be housed.”

Diakonia is calling the new property “The House of Hope.” The building will now hold the thrift shop, the administration offices, the food pantry. With the expectation of eventually house 42 transitional units for the homeless.

HOW THIS HAPPENED?

Diakonia Board Chair Brian Roberts said a member of the team donated the property. “Jack Burbage, one of our board members donated the property. And we’re blessed to have this.”

Community members and officials consider this a huge step forward. State Delegate Wayne Hartman declares his continued advocacy for further funding.

“I mean, there is no better cause. We are going to be advocating to get this in the governor’s budget to help with funding.”Diakonia3

Currently, Diakonia has already received $150,000. $75,000 through the House Capital Bond Project. And $75,000 through the administration.

THEY DESERVE IT

State Senator Mary Beth Carozza said Diakonia deserved this for their commitment. “They have volunteers who have been with Diakonia for years, who serve in the thrift shop, who go on the boardwalk to interact with the homeless, and who make sure there are options for those seeking and needing that assistance.”

She adds that their dedication to the veterans makes the group remarkable. “Diakonia’s longtime deep commitment to veterans, they don’t just talk the talk, they deliver. They take 37% of their budget and dedicate it to serving their veterans.”

Sen. Carozza also states that partnership is essential for correct project funding.

Diakonia officials expect “The House of Hope” facility will meet the region’s need for supportive housing, consolidate vital services, and expand it’s outreach.
