Snow Hill High schoolers are offered unique summer classes

Many high school students would consider it a sacrifice to spend their summer taking summer classes, but Snow Hill High School is looking to change that by adding new interactive courses.

“So when you turn it on it’s wheels it gets it rolling on the time,” explains Laura Neumyer, a junior at Snow Hill High School.

Neumyer is one of the students in the watch making class offered at Snow Hill High School.

“I’ve always wondered what happened, but i never took it apart before I came to this class,” says Neuymyer.

That’s just one of the three-week long enrichment classes offered to Snow Hill High schoolers this summer. On Tuesday, students also took part in DJing and CSI classes.
Snow Hill High School officials tell us they’ve added personalized enrichment classes to their summer school curriculum to change the way summer school is perceived by students.

Tara Downes, the Assistant Principal at Snow Hill High School says, “So it doesn’t have that stigma of kids just coming here to because they have no where else to go or they have to some here for credits.”

Snow Hill High School senior, Devon Deshields, is in the DJ course. He and his instructor showed 47 ABC  how the DJ turntable works.

“It’s for rewind and fast forward and it could be a fine tuner. If you come in and accidentally come in a half beat too late you can really quick adjust that,” says Deshields.

In another room is the CSI class. The course allows students to get a taste of what it’s like being a crime scene investigator. In Tuesday’s class, students learned how to identify blood types using a blood simulator. School officials tell us they hope these enrichment courses spark an interest in new skills or future careers.

“I want to be a dentist so i think like making watches and working with small tools and doing that with people’s teeth,” says Jordan Bishop, a junior at Snow Hill High School.
