Amazon is pushing for potential Trans-Atlantic cable that could span from Ocean City to Ireland
OCEAN CITY, Md. – Amazon is looking to build a transatlantic fiber-optic cable from a data center in Ireland to Maryland. The company believes the Ocean City airport would be a suitable location and has reached out to the resort town to explore an agreement.
Ocean City, on the other hand, is open to partnering with the company but wants to ensure that the commercial fishing industry will not be harmed or affected by the potential project.
“This would be the first transatlantic cable link in the state of Maryland. If we can help, we’re willing to do that, provided it works well with our commercial fishermen,” said City Manager Terry McGean.
There is no formal agreement yet, but the town has said negotiations are ongoing.
