Kids run the show…. animals

HARRINGTON, Del. — Have you ever heard of show goats?

Buddy, one of the kids showing goats, said, “It’s very cool. I like showing, and pigs are like—you can’t get control—but goats are easier.”

Kids run the show here at the Delaware State Fair—at least where show animals are concerned.

“I just showed my goat—actually, all our friends, Rebecca’s goat—and we got fifth for the, uh, goat. I got sixth, eighth place, I got fourth. I showed Indie, and I got second,” said the kids together.

One of the kids, Austin, was named best showman, and he shared all the things we should be looking out for. “So they’re looking for a stockier goat—more muscular, wider barrel, flatter muzzle and shorter legs. And they want it to have a good attitude—like want to walk, want to stand.”

Leah said she really enjoys showing her goats here at the state fair. “It’s fun, you know, being able to show and just having the experience to show.”

But it doesn’t come without its struggles.

“My goat is crazy,” said Luke.

“My goat is crazy too,” said Buddy.

Buddy added that you should come to the fair just for the animals. “There’s goats and animals and everything, so come visit.”

The Delaware State Fair is one of the only places here on the Shore where you’ll find big and small farm animals on a leash. So like Buddy said, come check it out!
