Salisbury Leadership Kicks off Summer with Game On Program

(SALISBURY, Md) – The city of Salisbury is launching a new program geared towards getting kids and their families outside this summer.

The program is called Game On, and Salisbury Mayor Randy Taylor tells us it’s a summer-long initiative to bring families to the park.

Mayor Taylor says they were able to move forward by hiring part-time staff for the park.

He tells us, “I think it’s a long time between school years. So I think it’s an opportunity for neighborhood kids to have a place to go and have some supervision and have plenty of places to play and and have some oversight.”

District 1 Council member April Jackson helped to launch the program, and she says she wanted to see the city breathe new life into the park.

“I love this park and this is where I grew up. at. I want to see it flourish to all our city parks, this vital program. And this is just a start to see how this goes. And I’m pretty sure it’s going to go pretty good. It’s going to be well…” says Jackson.

A big part of Game On this summer will be to provide free lunches to kids ages 18 years and younger.

Lending a hand to some families who may be struggling when it comes to making sure their kids are eating healthy.

“The kids do not get to get the nourishment that they need at lunchtime. So it’s very vital that we make sure our kids are fed and they are healthy and taking care of,” says Jackson.

While Mayor Taylor says, “I think it’s reflective of what we try to do with our community centers at Truitt Street and Newton Street, and this is an extension of that as well.”

Those lunches being given to the kids are provided for free by Wicomico County Public Schools.
