Diet Foodie Friday: Sunny Bay Cafe

"Delmarva's Delicious Diets"

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – It’s time again for Foodie Friday, and today is our special menus edition, where we highlight restaurants that cater to dietary restrictions, and this time we’re at Sunny Bay Cafe for this week’s Foodie Friday: Delmarva’s Delicious Diets!

Balanced Breakfast

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but if you don’t eat meat, eggs, dairy, or gluten, it can sometimes be a challenge. “I started noticing there was a lot of people that required, not even just wanted, but required sort of a different diet to keep them healthy, so I wanted to be able to provide something for people that they could feel comfortable going out to eat.”

Owner and Restaurateur Laurie Orfanidis says at Sunny Bay Cafe, you can enjoy breakfast your way. “We customize everything and make it exactly the way you want it to be. So, in one way or another we’ll make you happy and enjoy your meal… We actually have people come in with little cards of things they can and cannot have and we take that very seriously.”

Avocado Toast

Sunny Bay is a vegetarian’s dream with lighter fare like oatmeal or fruit cups, and sunny entrees including crepes, omelets, and more. However, Laurie says their toast, is top tier. “Pretty much the avocado toast for breakfast, and we do so many varieties of it, and we customize it. We can make it gluten free, we can make it dairy free, we can make it vegan.”

Head Chef Carl Frelix IV topped in with siracha, a fried egg, feta cheese, and red pepper flakes. Let’s just say, I’d have to agree. “Really good, love the spice that the siracha and red pepper flakes bring to this. The egg, cooked perfectly, it’s runny. It pairs well with the toast and the avocado. This is really good.”

French Toast

Many people enjoy a slice of bread in the morning, and French Toast is a morning staple, and another great vegetarian breakfast. Laurie says everything gluten free is cooked on a separate grill to avoid any cross contamination.

“French Toast is my favorite, and this has strawberries, blueberries, a little powdered sugar and I put some syrup on top let’s see. This is hitting y’all and this gluten free bread doesn’t taste bad at all.”

Accepting Allergies

If your vegan, have a lactose or an egg intolerance, or suffer from a gluten allergy Sunny Bay’s still got you covered. Their home style fries topped with sautéed onions can be cooked with butter or oil. You can add green peppers or crispy bacon too, and the sizzling vegan sausage patties were a perfect pairing.

I wanted to try their vegan breakfast platter. “I’m from the south so I’m going to try the grits first… Overall, this is giving balanced breakfast, this is really good. So, if you’re a vegan, gluten- free, especially egg-free, you would really enjoy this dish here.”

Respecting Restrictions

Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or Sunday brunch, Owner Laurie says when you come in be sure to tell your server if you need any special items, because at Sunny Bay Cafe they respect all restrictions, whatever the reason. “It’s a social experience. When you come out to eat you just want to be taken care of and that’s what we try to do. We’re not perfect, but that’s what we try to do. ”

Sunny Bay Cafe will have a special summer menu and they’re open every day during the summer from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm. If you check out their allergy specific dishes, be sure to tell them you saw them on Foodie Friday’s- Delmarva’s delicious Diets. If you have suggestions for Tierra, send them here.
