After the Whistle: Bennett’s Grason Adkins

SALISBURY, Md. – Many young athletes find their love for their sport just playing around in their backyard. That was the case for James Bennett lacrosse graduate Grason Adkins.

“There’s all different things you can do with the game of lacrosse, and different styles of play you can do.”

Adkins first picked up a stick when he was four years old. The growth was organic from there. “When I was younger I played with my older brothers a lot in the backyard and it kind of just [rose] from there…All aspects to it. Offense, defense, goalie, I played it all growing up, I just loved it,” Adkins said.

The Clippers attackman prides himself on his lacrosse IQ, making the right play and getting his teammates involved: I’m a very unselfish player I’d say. And I really like to pass the ball and score, passing it to my teammates instead of me scoring myself, but if the shot’s there then I’ll take it, but I really don’t take dumb shots, I’d say. I’m smart with the way I play.”

But the 2nd Team All-Bayside South selection wasn’t always so measured in his approach. It took learning from his older teammates to hone his game, something he took to heart when he became a leader on the team. “Then you go to high school and you play with older kids, they’ll tell you how it is and what you shouldn’t do, and you just kind of grow…for those underclassmen you have to be better, for yourself and for them. So I’d just say I grew just as a captain,” he said.
