Man sentenced for shooting, assault of correctional officer in Del.
CAMDEN, Del. – A Kent County man was sentenced last week to multiple charges related to a 2023 shooting.
21-year-old Jay’Mere Matthews pled guilty but mentally ill to first degree assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and guilty to second degree assault of a correction officer, and was sentenced last week to 11 years behind bars followed by descending levels of probation.
On August 22, 2023, Matthews was arrested after an incident at the Redner’s grocery store in Camden, where he reportedly shot an unarmed employee. While in custody at SCI for that incident, he assaulted a correctional officer on December 25, 2023.
Matthews will receive a mental health evaluation and may serve a portion of his sentence at the Delaware Psychiatric Center before he is remanded to the Department of Corrections.
