PTO treasurer arrested on felony theft charges

Authorities in Smyrna say a woman was arrested after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from a the Smyrna Parent Teacher Organization.

According to reports, SPD detectives were notified back in March of suspected thefts from the PTO. As the investigation continued, Police apparently identified the organization’s treasurer, Kellie Sullivan-Mcgovern, 39 of Smyrna, as the suspect. She was arrested August 2nd.

Smyrna Police say Sullivan-Mcgovern had a debit card issued to her for the organization, and, over the course of 2 years, she allegedly used it for unlawful and unauthorized personal purchases at a variety of locations. Her purchases reportedly included items and services from gas stations and liquor stores, along with baseball tickets and ATM withdrawals. According to police, the total loss to the Smyrna PTO is estimated to be approximately $11,000.

Sullivan-Mcgovern is facing two counts of felony theft, 136 counts of unlawful use of a payment card, and one count of falsifying business records. She was released on unsecured bond.
