Maryland severe storms awareness week

Monday will kick off Maryland’s 2025 Severe Storms Awareness Week. The National Weather Service and the Maryland Department of Emergency Management are coordinating the effort, which will run April 7-13.

A statewide tornado drill message will communicated via NOAA Weather Radio at 10:00am on Wednesday (4/9). This will also be broadcast over the Emergency Alert System (EAS) as part of the Required Monthly Test, which will be seen on TV and heard over the radio. The only exception to the drill will be cell phones, which will not be activated for the test.

Tornado Sheltering Guidelines

In addition to the tornado drill, a specific severe weather threat will be highlighted each day of the week:

Monday – Flooding
Tuesday – Damaging Winds
Wednesday – Tornadoes
Thursday – Hail
Friday – Lightning

The National Weather Service and the Maryland Department of Emergency Management will highlight facts about each type of dangerous weather phenomenon and focus on methods of safety and preparation as thunderstorms become more numerous in the coming weeks and months.
